CHT Initiative
Please note: Due to the nature of ministry activities and intolerant religious groups and government authorities we will keep the names of our mission workers private and confidential for their safety and well-being.
CHT is known as the Chittagong Hill Tracts where there lies a great need for Christ to be known. The area is 13,275,13 square Km and borders with Myanmar and India and is home to over eleven indigenous tribes that practice mainly Buddhism or Animism. Each tribe is unique and different from each other in language, culture, and traditions. Along the rough, hilly, green, lush terrain, military checkpoints exist as a reminder of hostility that has long existed between the local tribes and the government.
The indigenous tribes are easy to recognize with their mongoloid features and have migrated from the surrounding countries of Myanmar, India, Thailand and Mongolia before the British empire. The indigenous groups were first reached by the British Christian missionary, William Carey in the early 1800s. After active evangelism by the missionaries of the Baptist Missionary Society known today as the BMS World Missions more of these indigenous people gave their lives to Christ. Among the eleven ethnic groups, six of them are still unreached today (less than 2%) and are evangelical Christians. To this day the Christian population of CHT constitutes 0.03% of the whole population. Most of these tribes rely on agriculture “Jhum cultivation” methods for their livelihood. Witness Ministries first launched its mission activities in the Chittagong Hill Tracts through blanket distribution in the winter of 2011 at a lepers’ colony.
Witness Ministries works together with local indigenous community leaders to build trust and assist them in agriculture development and by providing quality education, microfinance programs, and development aid for their communities many of whom are underprivileged and animist. Working alongside them we help them to help themselves and point them to the Creator.
